Fall Risks and Interventions

These are some things to consider for a safer environment to help prevent falls.

Risk Factors Interventions Required
Throw or scatter rugs Remove or secure to floor
Poor lighting Replace bulbs / nightlights
Cluttered walking areas Keep walkways clear
Slippery surfaces Keep floors dry - wipe stills up
No bath mat on non-skid strips Use either a bath mat or non-skid strips, not both
Diminished vision Use night lights - have vision tested
Weakness Get enough rest, use walker, cane, wheelchair, raised toilet seat with arms
Dizziness Use grab bars, rise slowly before you start to walk
Poor balance Use ramps instead of steps, rise slowly to stand before you start to walk, handrails
Gait disturbance Use bath seat, hand held showerhead, cane or walker, and reachers to pick up things
Frequent nighttime urination Bedside commode, avoid steps, avo8id alcohol or alot to drink before bed, use a nightlight.
Carpets or rugs Use low pile carpets and rugs
